Theo was recently sent a copy of 'Shouty Kid - How Harry Riddles Made a Mega-amazing Zombie Movie' by Simon Mayle. The brightly coloured front cover immediately grabbed his attention as did the word 'zombie' - he seriously likes anything which has a zombie theme as do most of his friends.

The book follows 10 year old Harry Riddles as he tries to help his family after his father loses his job. Harry decides that making a zombie movie is the way to go but he needs the cash to get his scheme up and running so he writes to a variety of famous people to ask for their support. The story is told in a very modern format through the use of emails, texts and letters and is complemented by amusing black and white illustrations throughout.
I would definitely say that this book is an ideal gift for a slightly reluctant reader as the fast paced format will hold their attention. Theo found the story funny and laughed out loud as he read the book. I will say that he stumbled on a number of occasions as he had no idea who Harry Styles was or what words like 'cuz' meant so this was a completely new literary experience for him. I applaude Simon Mayle for using language which is familiar to many children as it makes literature accessible and fun.
Theo read the book within a couple of hours and when I asked him for his thoughts about it he replied,
'It was really funny and I liked the silly things that Harry did sometimes - it made me laugh. I liked the pictures too because they are very well drawn and funny.'
