Homeschool Adventures - A Summary

The weather has been gorgeous recently and we have spent huge chunks of our time outdoors. The knock on effect of this is that I haven't written about our home-education for a whole week so this is a brief, photographic summary post which will shed a little light on our recent adventures.

Our wall display this month is called 'Our World'. The boys have started to find out about continents and countries. Tristan has focused on Great Britain and where he lives. He learnt about the flags and then went on to design his own flag for his 'bedroom' country. Theo has looked at populations, languages, size and a variety of other facts.

Tristan has been making silly sentences by using his word cards. He has also learnt about question marks and when they should be used.

Every morning Tristan finds that I have left him a word card on his blackboard. He reads the word and then practices writing it on the board - he gets upset if I haven't left it for him. He reads a book out loud to me and writes a tally on his blackboard which shows how many times he has found that days word in the book. It might not sound particularly inspired but he thoroughly enjoys it which is all that matters.

Theo has read a heap of books since last week including many based on Greek mythology.

The Horrible History figures have seen lots of action this week. We spent the weekend making a large green felt board for the boys to use with their figures. They have an eclectic mix of figures from Boudicca to Caesar so the battles are nearly always referred to as time-wars. These pieces have taught them about many famous historical people which is why I'm happy to have the board as a centre piece on the coffee table.

They have played out every weekday evening with their friends and much more at the weekend. Tristan is now included fully in the older children's games which has made him very happy.

We attended the home-education group session earlier this week. I showed the children how to make egg tempura and how to achieve different colours with different natural materials. The children enjoyed grinding the ingredients together and experimenting on paper and canvas with their paints.

They have made a weather station this week and have been recording thier results. The station consists of a sundial, weather vein, barometer, thermometer and rain collection beaker. They are both excited about checking the station each morning and at regular intervals throughout the day.

As part of the weather station project the boys have learnt about air pressure, clouds, precipitation, evaporation, condensation, the rain cycle and practiced recording their results in a chart. They also made kites as part of the same project.

They have both continued with maths and English each morning before the project work. Theo is still working on his Ancient Greece project in his own time. He is absolutly fascinated by the ancient myths and this enthusiasm is rubbing off on his little brother who asks for 'Gweek myths' at bedtime.

In addition to all of this there has been plenty of music. Tristan can play his 'C' scale on the piano, as well as the start of the theme to 'Cars 2' and 'Doctor Who'. He loves tinkering on the piano and playing  his own compositions for me. Theo has practiced on both of his instruments as well as attending his lessons and orchestra practice sessions.

As well as all of this there have been hospital appointments, parents visiting, walks, games, film watching, cooking, cleaning, bee counting and numerous other little adventures taking place.

Where have your home-ed adventures taken you this week?
