Homeschool Adventures - summery summary

The boys and I have been taking full advantage of the sunshine everyday and every evening leaving little time for anything else. This is a catch post, a peer-through-the-window whistle stop tour around our home-school last week.

The 'Hunger Games' has featured regularly recently as the favoured game of the 'goonies' ( the boys and their group of local friends). They leave their Nerf Guns, sticks, arrows, water pistols and a-like on the round-a-bout and then take up positions around the perimeter of the park. The eldest shouts 'GO,' and they run like their lives actually depend on it to grab whatever they can from the armoury. Heart warmingly, the older boys give Tristan a handicap so that he stands a chance of getting something which I think is so kind. On some evenings there have been eight or nine of them playing - such fun.

They have both taken maths into the garden. Tristan used chalk to count and tally objects. He made a tally chart of sorts and drew lines in to represent red and pink roses. Theo looked at scale and also temperature using the garden thermometer.

Picnics took place on a number of occasions. The boys are both amazed by the idea of a jacket potato as a picnic delicacy and relished this delicious lunch twice last week. If there is one thing that I deem an absolute home-school necessity it has to be the humble picnic blanket as it doubles as a dining table and portable work room.

Theo whizzed through several chapters of both his maths text book and English text book. We should have finished with these books in time for September - I'm unsure why I still attach significance to this month as it really doesn't matter anymore but still, September should see us begin the next books in the series.

Tristan writes a word every day on his blackboard, then finds as many instances of the word in a reading book and tallies the number as he goes along. He then copies the word four times in a little exercise book and draws a picture based on the word. This is an activity which he asks to do and which he gets very excited about. He brandishes his book at his father once he has finished and says ' the computer wrote this- not me.' The joke continues for a while until he shouts (giggling) ' it wasn't  the computer, it was ME!' Whenever we have visitors he proudly takes them through his book of words and pictures - he is a bit of a show off. Last week he added four new words to his book.

Science was conducted mainly outdoors as well. We looked at soluble and insoluble materials. Theo wrote labels, tested various materials and made notes about the results in his book. Tristan explored what things can speed up a reaction and was interested to see how stirring and temperature can increase the reaction time.

There was also a great deal of reading. We continued with the 'Faraway Tree' by Enid Blyton andTristan  added a drawing of a Moon Face and a slippery-slip to his Faraway Tree collage.

We visited Grandparents, played tennis, Theo had music lessons, went to the library and had many more adventures. It was a busy, fun week.
