Tween & Teen Literature - The Maleficent Seven

Theo received a copy of 'The Maleficent Seven' by Derek Landy
courtesy of Harper-Collins publishing. His initial reaction of 'urgh there's a girl on the front cover' was rapidly replaced with 'cool - she's a bad guy and she's got a sword'. The strap-line for this standalone story which is set in the Skulduggery Pleasant universe is compelling and it had my eldest turning the pages within seconds of reading the blurb.
'It's a good day to be a bad guy...'

The story is an action packed, non-stop adventure with lots of humour thrown in along the way.
It revolves around Tanith Low who will be familiar to anyone who has read books in the Skuldugery Pleasant series. In this story she has been possessed by a remnant making her look terrifying and transforming her in to an evil force to be reckoned with. She recruits a gang of villains and together they track down and steal the four God-Killer level weapons that could hurt Darquesse when she eventually emerges. There is a secret group of Sanctuary Sorcerers on the trail of the weapons and one Mr Ghastly Bespoke who does his best to keep up and keep Tanith alive.
Theo couldn't put this book down and when I asked him if he was enjoying it he replied,
'Yes. It has fighting, vampires, remnants and loads of other cool stuff in it.'

The book is recommended for 11+ and Theo suggested that some of the language may be a little tricky for younger readers.
When asked if he would recommend this book to a friend on his book report Theo wrote,
' I would because it has plenty of action in it and I want anyone, at least one person, to read it because it is so good!'
I think the number-one best selling author Derek Landy would be more than happy with that gushing recommendation.

'The Maleficent Seven' by Derek Landy is available in all good book shops now with the paper-back priced at £6.99.
