Inside the Story House - Love Monster and the Last Chocolate

The mysterious, nocturnal postman delivered a shiny, tasty book to the Story House on behalf of Harper-Collins.

When my four year old son opened the door of the Story House and found 'Love Monster and the Last Chocolate' by Rachel Bright glittering back at him he was beside himself with excitement. The giant eyed monster stared back at him from the golden cover of the book imploring him to open it up, sit down and discover the sweet treat of a story within.

The poor old Love Monster finds himself in a terrible quandary centred around a box of chocolates he receives as a gift after returning from a holiday. The problem he faces was met with heartfelt sympathy by my son who could relate to the extraordinarily difficult decision Love Monster is ultimately required to make - to share or not to share, that greatest of childhood predicaments. My son empathised with Love Monster as he agonised over questions such as, 'what if there's only a coffee one left?' and 'what if someone eats the strawberry swirl?'

It is a delicious tale which ends, as all good children's picture books do, with a moral which on this occasion is about friendship. It is a story which will hook in a young child immediately because the giant eyed, lip-licking Monster is desperately adorable and because there is the continual reference to chocolate - yum, yum.

The illustrations are bold and amusing with our personal family favourite being an illustration across a double page spread of the possible contents of the chocolate box. The names given to each of the droolingly, delectable looking choccies are magnificently imaginative as are the marvellous illustrations.

This is a delightful book which inspired us to make a few home-made peppermint creams and begin a project all about chocolate. We give this book a large, hundreds and thousands covered, mint scented, sticky thumbs- up.

There will be a copy of this book up for grabs very soon so keep an eye on our blog to be in with a chance of winning this very palatable, picture book.
